About
The school on Carrow Hill was built in 1864 on the initiative of Caroline and Jeremiah James Colman, who intended it for the children of their Carrow Works employees. A second building was added in 1872 and extended a year later.
Caroline Colman and her daughters taught at the school, alongside paid teachers. Subjects required by the Education Act of 1870, including reading, writing and arithmetic, were supplemented at the Carrow School by classes which developed pupils' practical skills. These skills included modelling in clay, Venetian ironwork, gardening and beekeeping for boys, and basketry and domestic economy for girls.
By 1914 the school became too small for the growing number of pupils and it was finally closed in 1919. The pupils were moved to new, larger premises on City Road.
