About
Trowse Newton was one of the earliest industrial model villages. Jeremiah James Colman developed affordable-rent red-brick housing for workers around the time of his purchase of the Crown Point estate in 1872. The village was part of the 'cradle-to-grave' welfare system for the J. & J. Colman's factory workers.
Trowse inspired other model villages including Bournville, built for the workers of the Cadbury's factory, and Port Sunlight, built by the Lever Brothers for their soap factory workers. The Colman's model village included housing for the elderly at The Dell. Being the most liberal of the English model villages, it had had not one but two public houses.
