About

Clyffe House at Corton in Suffolk was purchased by Jeremiah James Colman in 1869 to be the family's seaside retreat.

The expansion of the house and surrounding buildings created more space for the growing Colman family as well as for the increasing collections of artefacts collected by Jeremiah James. One of the outbuildings, for example, was purpose-built to house his natural history collection, which is now in the care of Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.

In the 1870s, Jeremiah James spent £70,000 to prevent the erosion of the Corton cliffs. Despite these efforts, by 1917 the house was on the brink of collapse into the sea; its contents were sold and the house partially demolished.
