About
In 1784 John Money (later General Money) built a house on his family estate in Trowse Newton. Money served in Canada under the British General John Burgoyne at the time of Burgoyne's failed attempt to control the Hudson River Valley. Money named his new house Crown Point, after Fort Crown Point, a British fort which had been re-occupied by the British (including Money's regiment) during Burgoyne's campaign.
In 1861 the Norfolk Crown Point estate was purchased by Robert Harvey, who built a large Elizabethan mansion.
Jeremiah James Colman purchased Crown Point in 1872. The house contained a large part of the Colman collection of paintings until they were donated to Norwich Castle Museum after the death of Jeremiah James' eldest son, Russell Colman.
