Russell James Colman

The collector

Young Russell J. Colman

Russell joined the family business at 19 and became the chief director at Carrow on his father Jeremiah James' death in 1898. Like his father, Russell pursued a public and political career alongside his business commitments, although, in his case, the former seemed to take precedence.

He served as mayor of Norwich, chairman of Norfolk County Council and Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, alongside other roles and honours.

Russell inherited a vast portion of his father's book and art collection, and was particularly fond of the collection of works by the Norwich school of painters.

He continued to expand the collection during his life, and it became part of his bequest to Norwich Castle Museum: he donated paintings and drawings as well as the money to build new galleries to house the works. The new Colman Galleries were opened in 1951 by Princess Elizabeth.
