In addition to her paintings and sketches (see entries 92 and 94), Philippa Miller (1905-2006) has provided us with a vivid insight into life in wartime Norfolk in other ways. Her writings outline the contrasting life between the idyllic setting of the Norfolk Broads with the uncertainty of daily life in the city and along the east coast due to bombing raids by the German Luftwaffe and destruction from the ‘doodlebugs’ (V1 rockets). Philippa was actively involved in the daily response of the local population. By day she was a teacher at the Blythe School in Norwich and, together with her friend and fellow teacher Pamela Baker, spent many long hours ‘fire-watching’. The many incidents she saw have been recorded in her pictures.
