Description
An oil painting of Ribecourt made by B H L Prior in 1938 complete with the letter he sent to Captain C P Bassingthwaighte explaining it. Letter reads " 10.X.38. Dear Bass, I am enclosing the sketch of Ribecourt. It was taken as near as I can judges from somewhere near Unseen Support, but there is now no sign of the old trenches. The sunken road on the left was roughly the dividing line between A Company's advance and B Company. The line of trees are along the Grand Ravine. On the left skyline are trees round Flesquieres. You can't see the village now as you could in the War. Did I tell you that whilst I was making the Sketch the Mayor of Ribecourt arrived and saluted me as the "le Saviour de Ribecourt?" I didn't tell him that as the result of our intervention the damned place was shelled to bits. We had a very merry evening last night but I don't feel so good today. The original letter is in Prior's biog file. On the back of the frame C P Bassingthwaighte has written "Painted by Col BHL Prior DSO. Cambria. Battle Area of 9th Royal Norfolk Regt. Ribecourt was captured by the 9th Norfolks which ?housed? a Brigadier - his staff etc. & many prisoners taken. This painting was given me by my late & beloved Col Bernard Prior. Signed C P Bassingthwaighte Late Capt 9th Norfolks.
