The Julian March
Accession Number NWHRM : 6976
Description
A double-sided map detailing Julian March around 1945 after World War II. The Julian March was the term used for contested areas of land that Yugoslavia and Italy fought for control over. The first map is coloured and shows the different nationalities that were in Julian March in 1945. A legend along the bottom left provides a list of the nationalities with their corresponding colours depicted on the map. Such ethnicities depicted include Yugoslavs (Slovens and Croats), Yugoslav ethnic territory lost, Italians (including Fiulans), and districts with an Italian majority. A scale at the bottom indicates 1 inch to 10 miles. The other side of the map, written in Italian, is a reduced reproduction of an Italian army map accompanying a detailed report on the serious extent of sabotage of communications to the ports of the Northern Adriatic effected by the Yugoslave partisans of the Julian March. It shows railroad tracks, state borders, and dates in which acts of sabotage occurred between July 7, 1943 and April 13, 1944.
