Accession Number NWHRM : 6964

Description

A black and white paper pamphlet map detailing the surrounding area of Dentersdorp, South Africa, part of the Transvaal (Major Jackson Series). The inside of the pamplet contains a handwritten note by the map's owner Captain Lodge. The map is compiled from the Transvaal Farm Surveys in the Surveyor General's Office- Pretoria under the direction of Major H.M. Jackson in October 1900. It was lithographed as the 4th edition in June 1901 at Pretoria in the Survey and Mapping Sections Field Intelligence Department Army Headquarters. There is a scale located at the base indicating 2.35 English miles to an inch; or roughly 1 mile to a centimeter. A reference guide can be found to the right of the scale labeling Territory Boundaries, District boundaries, Farms boundaries, railways, roads, paths, and telegraph lines. Topography and sites of the map are also labelled in the guide detailing pans/dams, homesteads/Kraals, farm numbers-heights, military posts, Mission Stations and Police Stations, Magistrates Office-Police Posts, and post and telegraph offices. To the left of the scale resides the key map of corresponding sheets numbered 1 to 57. This map would have been made and used during the Anglo Boer War, or the South African War, which took place from 1899 to 1903.
