Sheet No. 47: Klerksdorp
Accession Number NWHRM : 6963.6
Description
A black and white linen map pamphlet, part of the Transvaal Major Jackson's series, of the surrounding area of Klerksdorp, Africa compiled from the Transvaal Farm Surveys etc. in the Surveyor General's Office under the direction of Major H.M. Jackson in January 1901. This map, though, is a partly revised edition from Febuary, 1901 by the No. 1 Survey Section. It was lithographed in Pretoria in the Survey and Mapping Sections Field Intelligence Department Army Headquarters. The inside cover of the pamphlet contains hand-written notes by unknown author. Parts of the map are underlined with brown and green pencil. There is a scale located at the base indicating 2.35 English miles to 1 inch, or approximately 1 cm to the mile. A reference guide can be found to the right of the scale labeling labeling Territory Boundaries, District boundaries, Farms boundaries, roads, and telegraph lines. Topography and sites of the map are also labelled in the guide detailing pans/dams, homesteads/Kraals, farm numbers-heights, and military posts. The rest of the guide is cut off. A key map of corresponding sheets numbered 1 to 57 can be found to the left of the scale. This map would have been made and used during the Anglo Boer War, or the South African War, which took place from 1899 to 1903.
