No. 19

Accession Number NWHRM : 6963.2

Description

A black and white paper map of the area surrounding northern Rustenburg, Africa compiled from the Farm Surveys etc. in the Surveyor General's Office under the direction of Major H.M. Jackson. It was lithographed in January 1901 at Pretoria in the Survey and Mapping Sections Field Intelligence Department Army Headquarters. There is a scale located at the base indicating approximately 1 cm to the mile. A reference guide can be found in the bottom right hand corner under the key map of corresponding sheets numbered 1-57. The reference guide labels the railways, main roads, roads, rivers, pans, homesteads, farm boundaries, and district boundaries of the area. A disclaimer is situated at the bottom left portion of the map stating that the Farm Boundaries are shown by broken lines from Sketch plans and are therefore unreliable. This map would have been made and used during the Anglo Boer War, or the South African War, which took place from 1899 to 1903.
