Description
A coated cotton black and white map of Pretoria, South Africa compiled from the Farm Surveys etc. in the Surveyor General's Office Pretoria. It was produced under the direction of Major H.M. Jackson in the August of 1900. It was also lithographed at Pretoria in August 1900 at the Suvery and Mapping Sections of the Field Intelligence Department Army Headquarters. The top right corner shows a reference guide detailing railways, main roads, roads, rivers, pans, homesteads, farm boundaries, and heights from ZASM Railway levels. (The ZASM, more commonly known as the NZASM, was the Netherland South African Railway Company based in Amersterdam and Pretoria.) A scale is located at the base which indicates approximately 1 cm to a mile. To the bottom right corner of the map shows a key map of corresponding sheets numbered 1-57. This map would have been made and used during the Anglo Boer War, or the South African War, which took place from 1899 to 1903.
