silk embroidery
Accession Number NWHRM : 6815
Description
Silk embroidery by Albert Catchpole for his wife Lily on blue fabric with a white fringe. In the centre, Albert has embroidered a large design in chain stitch of the badge of the Norfolk Regiment, a seated figure of Britannia holding an olive sprig and trident, with a Union Jack shield resting against her side. She is surrounded by a giant wreath of laurels, and beneath her is a banner reading 'the Norfolk Regt'. At the top, Albert has embroidered in the same white thread 'Souvenir of Egypt 1916', and at the bottom, 'From Albert To Lil'. On thewords 'the' and 'Lil', some of the white thread is missing, revealing blue markings underneath. Blue background with fringed edges. It is torn and frayed in several places.
