Prismatic Magnifying Periscope Mark VIII

Accession Number NWHRM : 6367

Description

Hand held periscope. Prismatic Magnifying Periscope Mark VIII, 1917, by R & J. Beck. Khaki painted tubular brass periscope. The object or top prism is let into the one inch diameter tube. The eye piece at the bottom is in a horizontal tubular extension, which screws in and out to focus. There is a crack in the prism. The tube ends in a treaded hole into which a wooden (ash?) handle is screwed. Where the eyepiece joins the main tube is a round disc marked: PERISCOPE Mk. VIII, 1917, R & J Beck Ltd., No. 5698. When disassembled the periscope fitted top first into an inverted 'L' shaped leather case, the handle strapped onto the outside. This example has lost its case.
