Description

Four coloured, paper maps glued together mapping the Bay of Bengal and Burma; showing the regions of Arakan and Mandalay. The map was owned by John Howard, Intelligence officer of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment.The colours of the map, namely shades of purple, indicate the altitudes of the area. The map is an army air edition that was marked for official use only. The base of the map contains multiple indexes including Reference, Adjoining Sheets, Scale, and a Relative Reliability; all in both English and French. The Reference includes indicators for headquarters, capital of the countries, lighthouses, post offices, rest houses, ruins, mines/oil wells and pipe lines, temples and mosques, aerial ropeways, power lines, and submarine cables. The Scale includes kilometres, nautical miles, and english miles. Along the right side includes a magnetic variation conversion chart as well. The maps were compiled, drawn, and photo-zincographed by (H.L.O.) the Survey of India.
