Accession Number NWHRM : 5219.7

Description

Letter written by Colonel Borton of the 2nd Battalion Norfolk Regiment which he commanded in South Africa, to Colonel A.C. Becher Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion. Dated 11th Sept.1902. Sent from South Africa. Borton reassures his friend that the new Indian draft were unfit only thro' the long sea voyage. Opines that the fact that 51 non-commoissioned officers and men got into trouble at Pietermeritzburg was due to the authorities not providing a canteen for them. Mentions how hard up he is (4d for a collar. 1 shilling to wash a shirt.) Gives battalions movements; under canvas, busy building. Mentions a number of officers by name.
