A means of identifying the dead and wounded was first employed in the Boer War in the form of a linen strip carried in a pocket inside the jacket. In 1906 an aliminium disc fastened around the neck was substituted. In 1916, a single identity disc was replaced by two, so that one could be removed from the body of a dead soldier for administrative reasons, and one stay with the body for future identification.
