Description

Page from the August 5 1882 issue of the Army and Navy Gazette reporting that Colonel G.H. Hawes, late of the 9th Foot, refused to accept the good-sevice pension because he did not require the monetary award and believed that it would be better bestowed on a poorer man who might need it to follow out his profession; the writer of the article suggests that Col Hawes should be awarded a gold medal for distinguished and good service although the money reward has been refused
