Company Sergeant Major Hipkin enlisted in the 3rd(Militia) Battalion, Norfolk Regiment in 1896. He was a labourer from Syderstone near Fakenham and a Wesleyan. He volunteered for service with the 2nd Battalion in the Boer War. He became a Colour Sergeant in September 1914 and served with the 1st Battalion in the First World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in September 1918, the Meritorious Service Medal in 1919 and served with the 5th Battalion (TA) after the war. He was discharged in 1932, after being associated with the Regiment for over thirty-five years.
