Read MoreTobacco tin
A tin originally containing fifty cigarettes.Tobacco was issued to British troops as part of their rations. It effectively calmed the nerves and staved off hunger pangs. Frontline trenches were not the place to worry about the dangers of smoking...unless an enemy sniper saw the glow of your cigarette at night. Lit cigarettes are visible from a long distance at night and anyone near the battlefront had to be wary of giving their position away to enemy observers and snipers.
