At the begining of the war British troops in the Far East wore Khaki Drill (K.D.) cotton clothing of the same colour as in the Middle East. K.D. was not robust enough or dark enough to blend in with the vegetation of the Far East. By 1942 new 'Jungle Green' clothing began to be introduced. All outer clothing was dyed dull dark green. Underwear, socks and towels were dyed a lighter green, for camouflage when hung up to dry. Web equipment was also dyed darker and a suitably cloured blanco protective paste was available. This jungle green blouse was worn with trousers which were standard legwear in all tropical areas. Shorts did not protect against malaria-carrying mosquitos.
