Description
Infantry Officers Sword and scabbard 1822 pattern. Belonged to Major J Fildes who served in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion in 1901 as a Captain and as Honorary Major in 1904. Hilt gilt-brass, concave knuckle guard dividing into 4 bars at the obverse, 1 bar at the reverse which does not fold, down-swept quillon, crowned royal cipher patterned into lower side of guard. Sword knot slot at top of knuckle guard. Pommel - concentric diminishing rings leading to tang button, foliate back-piece, ribbed ferrule, leather strip tied to lower end of guard. Grey fish-skin bound with yellow wire. Blade: straight, flat back edge, spear point, single fuller, buff leather washer missing. Scabbard: steel, 2 bands with loose rings, drag shoe.
