At the outbreak of war the territorial battalions were doubled in number. The original battalions, the 4th, 5th and 6th were renamed the 1/4th, 1/5th and 1/6th each having a second line battalion created as a training and feeder battalion; the 2/4th, 2/5th and 2/6th. Uniforms and equipment were scarce and took time to be issued. This armband was an initial insignia for recruits before any other uniform was available.
