Tibetan Sword

Description
A Tibetan sword in a wooden scabbard brought back from the Younghusband Mission to Tibet by Lieutenant Hadow in 1904. The hilt has a squared wood grip, octagonal metal hand stop/pummel and shallow cup-shaped guard. The blade is straight, parallel sided with flattened diamond cross section. The scabbard is cloth-bound wood, some leather binding but has some missing parts.

The Tibetans armed with swords were determined fighters. Hadow describes in a letter home how the correspondent of the Daily Mail was was looking on at Thuna 'when the melee started and they fell upon him and hacked him about fearfully. He has had his left hand amputated and may lose the other hand as well.'
