French Cavalry sword
Accession Number NWHRM : 2812
Description
Late 19th century Dutch Heavy Cavalry Sword. Incorrectly listed as French Cavalry sword, dated around 1815 in accession register. The maker’s mark of Weyersburg, Kirschbaum & Cie dates this to post 1883. The other marks suggest a Dutch weapon assembled by S de Jager using a German blade. Hilt: Basket hilt, flat metal pierced to form 3 bars on obverse and single bar on reverse, curled to make a down-swept cylindrical quillon. Plain pommel with burred tang-end showing, continuing in a plain back piece. Plain oval ferrule. Gilt wired fish-skin grip. Blade: Washer at shoulder. Slightly curved near flat-backed, single fuller along whole blade, false edge, spear point. Scabbard: Plain white metal. One band with loose ring.
