Description

Royal Engineers Volunteer Field Officer’s Sword Pattern 1857. Hilt: Pierced brass bowl with scrolled foliage/honeysuckle, curled cylindrical quillon. Oval hole for sword knot at top of guard. Blackened bullion knot on bullion cord with 2 runners. Diamond-hatched brass pommel with nut, plain then hatched back-piece leading to ribbed ferrule. Wire-bound grey fish-skin grip. Blade: Straight, false edge, slightly rounded back edge, single fuller, spear point, buff leather washer. Scabbard: Brass, black paint wearing off. Mouthpiece 2 screws but 1 missing, 2 bands with loose rings, large drag shoe. Dented on reverse below middle band and again above shoe.
