Description

German Presentation Sword, 1931. Hilt: lion’s mask pommel, red glass eye (left eye missing), back-piece decorated with sunburst, ear with rivet, leaf decorated ferrule, reverse P shape stirrup guard of gilt brass with diamond motif, down swept quillon with lion-head finial, obverse languet with foliate decoration, reverse languet with blank shield, wire bound shagreen grey grip. Steel scabbard with one band with loose ring and fixed bar at reverse, dragshoe. Blade is flat backed and has slightly curved spear point. Buff leather washer at hilt. The blade is decorated with foliage and a trophy of 3 sheathed swords and a sabretache and the inscription ‘Der Schutzenverein Volbert dem Oberst Grafe gewidmet 1931’. (Dedicated to Colonel Grafe by the Schutzenverein (Marksmen Society) of Volbert). Also the name of the maker Paul Weyersburg & Co Solingen.
