Description
German Imperial Army Officer's sword. Hilt is gilt-brass, oakleaf decorated,. Lion’s mask pommel with red glass eyes, back-piece decorated with 4 point star in leaves extending around grip to form ears. Oak decorated ferrule. Reverse P shaped stirrup guard, foliate and diamond geometrical decoration with blank scroll. Downswept quillon with lion’s head finial. 2 languets, obverse 2 crossed cannon barrels set in leaves, reverse blank. Grip: black leather bound by twisted gilt wire. Knopple by ear. The scabbard is steel, painted black. One band with loose suspension ring. Drag shoe. Plain mouthpiece held by 2 screws. The blade is slightly curved, single fuller, single edged, slightly rounded backed, spear-point. Buff leather washer hidden by languets. Etched on the blade on ricasso, just visible behind reverse languet there is an ‘S’ and pans from a pair of scales with the word SOLINGEN.
