Captain William Wellington Powell, 1813–1879 joined the Regiment in 1832 as an ensign. He became a Lieutenant in 1835 and a Captain in 1843‘, leaving the Regiment in 1847 to join the 3rd West India Regiment. Capt. Powell was awarded the Afghan War Medal for service in the First Afghan War 1842. Following the publishing of this painting online, it has been suggested by the original donor's family that this scene in fact depicts the Temple Ruins at Karnak. William W Powell did not visit Egypt with the 9th Foot, but may have done so with the 3rd West India Regiment. This illustrates how important it is to maintain accurate documentation with objects.
