Description

Nominal roll of men of the 6th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment, who died on the ship 'President Harrison' (renamed 'Kachidoki Maru') when she was torpedoed by the 'USS Pampanito' on night of 12 September 1944 enroute to Japan. The ship sank within minutes.The 900 Prisoners of War on board had to jump into the sea in the dark of night. 400 men lost their lives. The following morning Japanese ships returned the to pick up the surviving men. Over 500 POWs were transferred to another ship, the 'Kibitsu Maru', upon which the rescued men continued their journey to mainland Japan. They remained in captivity until the end of the war.
