For the British Small Box Respirator to work, the rubber mask must make a gas-proof seal with the wearer's face. Anything that could break this seal and let gas be breathed directly had to be avoided. The side-frames of ordinary spectacles would hold the mask away from the cheeks and so these minimal glasses were prescribed.
