There are many kinds of trench art. Some items were made by soldiers as souvenirs and to alieviate boredom, while other objects were made commercially as a cottage industry. The chalk of the Somme area was convenient and easy to carve and these items tended to be made by soldiers themselves. It was typical to carve ones own regimental badge.
