Brass Cannon (Japanese)

Description

Japanese muzzle-loading, percussion-fired brass cannon mounted on two iron-bound wheels. Wooden chassis with single carved wooden tail. The hammer can be brought to half-cock and dropped onto the percussion cap by moving the button behind the hammer backwards. The barrel unit has provision for recoil along the upper carriage. Captured by a detachment of the Norfolk Regiment, 2nd Battalion when engaged in battle with a 600 strong group of Japanese rebels in Osaka.

The 2nd Battalion were sent to recuperate in Yokohama in 1865 after serving in China and suffering a lot of illness. They spent two years on embassy protection duties in Japan. This gun was captured from insurgents while the Battalion was assisting the Japanese Tycoon.
