Sir John Moore was a famous general who was killed during the withdrawal to Corruna during the Peninsular War. The Regiment formed the rear-guard for the retreat and provided the burial party for Sir John. In recognition of this, a black line was included in the gold trim, or lace, of the uniforms of officers of the Regiment.
