The battle was to defend the town and harbour of Corunna where the British Army was waiting for ships to take it back to England. The 9th Foot was the last regiment to leave and in recognition of it forming the burial party for Sir John Moore, it was later given permission to wear a black line in uniform lace and the regimental drummers cords to be black.
