Originally trained as a coach painter, James Sillett studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and specialised in still life and architectural subjects. He also painted miniatures and worked as a scene painter and drawing master. Sillett was highly regarded in Norwich for his detailed and highly finished fruit and flower compositions. He exhibited his first flower piece at the Royal Academy in 1798. In 1802 he announced an exhibition in which 'those who are partial to Flowers, will there find a small collection in bloom in all seasons.'
