Drawing, 'The Pool by the Roadside' by William Capon (1757-1827), pencil and watercolour on paper, undated; 36.6 cm x 23.6 cm; inscription on reverse signed and dated 'The Pool by the Roadside near Cobham in Kent close by the house of Mr. Saltonstall where the Pilgrims used to wash their feet in their journey to visit St Thomas a Becket's Tomb at Canterbury - (W C 1784? erased) a part of the Roman highway was discovered by Mr. Saltonstall on the Ground by the Pool but on the other side of the hedge, he dug it up and planted potatoes on the site as he has told to me W. Capon 1784'; inscription on mount 'Coll / Sir Thomas Philips L CW no D3153'
