Thirkettle's handwriting on reverse numbered '54 / Bishop Bridge / City 1393 / at west end and extending over the / first arch stood till 1791 a / gate tower of which only the bases / of its round turrets survive / Tower provided J. Nickand Sp.../ before dissolution a hermit - nominated of / the Prior dwelt in the hermits' house / which adjoined the gate / 1549 ......'
